Past, Present & Future
Legacy of Hope Austin launched as a non-profit organization in Austin, TX in August of 2010. From that point on the director, Julie Lyles Carr, began pushing to start several programs under one firm goal--to provide fun, celebratory, free services to families of children with special needs. This was the catalyst for starting 2night2dream (date night/respite care), 2learn2dream (tutoring), and 2dance2dream (dance classes and performances).
In August of 2011, 2dance2dream held its first official class in Austin, TX. From that point on, the program has expanded from seven students to 50 with locations in South Austin, Round Rock, Leander, Lakeway and Westlake. In addition, there are prospects outside of Austin and outside of Texas in the works!
In 2017, 2dance2dream secured its official standing as an independent 501(c)3! Our journey as a dba of Legacy of Hope Austin has been beautiful, fortifying, and important. As we move on to begin building our own entity, we cannot thank Legacy of Hope Austin and Heart at Home Inc. for the support! Those two programs created the launchpad so that we could take flight as a program dedicated to providing dance and the arts for individuals of all abilities.
Looking forward, we hope this program will eventually become a nationally recognized need at every studio. We also hope to provide resources for studios around the country in the hopes that it will become typical for every studio in America to house a class for individuals with special needs. We believe it is time to change "normal."
With your help we look forward to fulfilling more dancing dreams through local and national reach.
To provide quality dance opportunities to individuals with special needs
Through training, consistency, and continued growth, we are committed to providing fun and beneficial classes to individuals with special needs. We will discover their natural abilities and challenge them to grow without ignoring or mainly focusing on their differences.
To create fun, memorable and safe moments
Dance is therapy but we don’t focus on doing therapy. Yes, we have students who get stronger because of their time with 2dance2dream, but our main focus is fun. We strive to ensure every class makes the individual feel safe and welcome so they can challenge themselves and build healthy relationships with others in the class.
To offer services at no cost to our clients
We are committed to keeping classes available at no cost to families. This will be done by maintaining a non-profit status as well as hosting annual fundraising events.
To change "normal"
“Normal” says dance classes are only for typically developing children. “Normal” says most dance studios don’t offer classes for individuals with special needs. Whether we are training teachers, providing educational resources for studios, or simply inspiring dance teachers to start their own programs, we are excited to be a part of a movement that changes what “normal” says about dance.
